Obituary for Erma Joanne Larsen (Denstedt)

Erma J. Larsen, age 74, of Walkerton died peacefully at the Walkerton Hospital on October 15, 2018.

Erma leaves behind her children Tanya Larsen-Bollenbach (Tom Bollenbach), Jamie Larsen (Angela), and Ingrid Larsen (Kevin Deonarine); sister Bonnie Martin (Harvey); brothers Carter Denstedt (Wanda) and Shawn Denstedt (Judy); grandchildren Katarina and Theodore Bollenbach, Jane, Nathan and Thomas Larsen, Colby and Raina Deonarine; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roger J. Larsen; parents, Harold and Ruby Denstedt; and sister Holly.

Our mom, Erma, was born in Listowel, ON on April 7, 1944 and grew up on her family’s farm in Maryborough Township within the tight knit Denstedt family. We feel fortunate to have heard her fantastic stories about farm life, the house she lived in, learning to ride a bike, and her black feet that resulted from the paving of a local road. From an early age our Mom was challenged with lung and hearing issues. These health challenges and her family made her the person that she was, resilient, determined, smart, and extremely proud. After graduating from Listowel High School, she attended what is now the Michener Institute. Together with our caring and devoted dad, Roger, our mom raised us to appreciate family and to be independent thinkers. After Dad passed away, Mom was our rock ensuring minimal disruption to our lives. Once we left home, she also flourished as a person being active with golf, curling and bridge, and becoming a voracious reader of financial and non-fiction literature. She enjoyed walking on the beaches of Mexico and the Caribbean, seeing the sights of the United Kingdom, and sampling the wine and food of Europe. Our Mom was a fiercely proud grandmother. Always happy to play games with our children, display their artwork and pictures in her home, and listen to their stories. Up to her last moments, Mom wanted to hear how her grandchildren were doing and loved their visits.

We wish to thank physicians Susan McArthur of Walkerton and Amanda Steiman of Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or the Walkerton and District Hospital Foundation CT Scan Campaign.

All are invited to gather on Saturday, October 20 at 11 am at Cameron Funeral Home, 1106 Yonge Street South, in Walkerton, ON for a celebration of Erma’s life, with a luncheon to follow.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association or the Walkerton & District Hospital Foundation - CT Scan. www.cameronfuneralhomes.com.
