My heartfelt condolences to the family of my friend, Harvey Hinsperger, a good man, a hard-working man, an inspirational man, one I looked up to. I am grateful to have known him.

On October 21st, I played a concert at Rockwood Terrace where Harvey was staying. Seated at the back of the room, I didn't realize it was him until after the show, as I was taking things to the door, he hailed me over to say 'hello'. I wasn't expecting to meet him there and was surprised to see, and very happy too, as something special had happened without me planning it.

A few years earlier, at the Canada Day celebrations in Walkerton, Harvey and his dear wife Irene were in my audience. After that show, Harvey asked me if I knew the song 'Irene, Goodnight'. At the time, I did not, apologizing to them, promising to learn it, which I did. That song has been a staple at my care home concerts since. I learned it for them, hoping one day to sing it for them.

Back to my show at Rockwood, I happened to conclude that show with 'Irene, Goodnight', without realizing it was Harvey in the back corner. I was very moved to have at last sang that for him, as we spoke briefly about that co-incidence and our fond memories of The Hartley House and Newman's.

I performed at Rockwood again today, looking for his face in my audience, worried when I didn't find him, and much saddened to learn of his loss when I inquired. A dear sweet soul, I'll miss him.
