Obituary for Joseph Stanley Niesen

Joseph “Joe” Stanley Niesen of Walkerton passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Grey Bruce Health Services, Owen Sound, at age 72.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Margaret of 40 years and their children Janice and Derek. Joe will be fondly remembered by his siblings Rita Brandridge of Bracebridge, Carol (Wally) Halliday of Brockton, Chuck (Vivian) of Hanover, Jim (Dennise) of Mildmay, Betty (Rob) Giaschi of Etobicoke, Mike (Annie Finch) of Elmira, Ann (Harvey) Voisin of Walkerton, Dave (Penney) of Mildmay, Doris (Oleh Wozniuk) Walker of Bracebridge, mother-in-law Marion Elliott of Corunna, brothers-in-law Ken (Kathy) Elliott of Marshall, Wisconsin, and Ralph Elliott of Corunna, and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his siblings Mary Ann, Delores, Bob, and Bill, brother-in-law Lawrence Brandridge, Mike's partner Lily Graham, father-in-law Murray Elliot and parents Stanley and Bernice (nee Durrer) Niesen.

Joe was an avid sports fan who played hockey, baseball and golf. His special love was golf and he was especially thrilled when he scored a “hole in one” in 2003 witnessed by his “golf buddies” Jerry Johnson and Bill Reddon. Another highlight was winning the Hospital Tournament in 1999 and 2001.

Joe was very lucky when he was given a second chance at life upon receiving a heart transplant in 1992. This past April he celebrated thirty years with his new heart. A heartfelt thank you to the Transplant Team at University Hospital, London, for their excellent care over the past 30 years.

Friends and relatives are invited for visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at St. Paul’s United Church, Walkerton. Rev. Cathy Paul officiating.

Cremation has taken place with a private family interment in Walkerton Cemetery.
