Obituary for Ronald John Fischer

Ronald John Fischer of Walkerton passed away at home on Friday, December 16, 2022, in his 91st year.

Beloved husband of Helen (nee Clark) for 67 years, and father to Paul (Connie) of Teeswater, Marlene O’Hagan of Walkerton, Debbie (Murray) Hodgins of Bervie, Norma (Doug) Zettler of Walkerton, Carol (Brian) Ernewein of Ottawa, and Cheryl (John) Grant of Hanover. Cherished “Grandpa” of 18 grandchildren and “G-pa” of 19 great grandchildren. Ron will be missed by his siblings Alf (Laura), Betty Haelzle, Charles, Paula (Allan) Weber, and Pat Goetz, as well as Helen’s siblings Shirley Fair, Donnie (Judy) Clark and Joan (Gib) Jorden.

Predeceased by his sons Rick and Tim, son-in-law Nick O’Hagan, parents Dominic and Pauline (nee Schnurr) Fischer, and 6 brothers and 6 sisters.

Ron was a man of many interests and talents. Having left school early to help support his family, he eventually joined The Teeswater Creamery (now Gay Lea), starting on the “can truck” and later driving bulk trucks for a total of 32 years.

Once retired, Ron picked up the bee business and supplied his family and friends with the golden liquid we all enjoyed. He also made maple syrup for many years, once again sharing in his labour of love with family and friends.

Ron also pursued an interest in woodworking, developing a real talent to work and fashion wood into cherished pieces of furniture and cabinetry. He spent many hours in his workshop creating beautiful pieces. His pride and joy was a roll-top desk that he brought along from the farm to town. He made rocking horses for each of his children’s families and many other heirlooms including dressers, desks, headboards, kitchen cupboards and so much more. We have all enjoyed our father’s story-telling abilities right up to the end. He was an incredible historian, and we will also miss his wonderful sense of humour. He loved his family and took great pride and joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We will raise a glass of red wine and say, “cheers to a wonderful man.”

Friends and relatives were invited for a casual visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Church, Cargill.

A private interment was held at Mary Immaculate Cemetery, Chepstow.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Walkerton Food Bank or Saugeen Hospice Inc. would be appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
